Police Department Real Talk San Mateo: Know the Rules for E-Bikes & Electric Rideables – July 22 Real Talk San Mateo: Electric Rideables & the Law on Tuesday, July 22 is your must-attend session if you ride or plan to ride an e-bike, scooter, moped, or electric board! During the event, which takes place at the San Mateo Police Department or online on Zoom, we'll break down exactly what’s legal (and what’s not), how to tell if your ride is street legal, and what could get you cited or even impounded. From age limits and helmet laws to bike lane access and licensing, this session clears up the confusion and gives you the knowledge to ride safely and legally. Whether you're a rider, a parent, or just trying to stay informed, this is critical info you won't want to miss. Did you know that there are so many new rules affecting the use of E-bikes? You may be wondering if it's street legal, what the age requirement is, if you need a license -- it can be quite confusing. We aim to educate our community, both riders, and parents who purchase these "bikes" for their kids so it can be a safe and fun experience. If you'd like to attend in person, then you must register for a free ticket via the Eventbrite link here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/real-talk-san-mateo-lets-talk-about-e-bikes-and-the-rules-of-the-road-tickets-1434996135069?aff=oddtdtcreator. Or you can tune in without registering via Zoom here: You are invited to a Zoom webinar! https://cityofsanmateo-org.zoom.us/j/86973454997?pwd=Zao6k7hb4Doxrbyg4xgXOdNRXoDbrX.1 Passcode:717507 Thank you to Straight Wheel Cycling (SWC) for letting us borrow some e-bikes to display. Photo of Christmas Banner, San Mateo Public Library, San Mateo Local History Collection, via Calisphere, accessed July 16, 2025. In March 1968, the San Mateo City Council unanimously “adopted” the 115 enlisted men and six officers of Company A, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, who came to be known as the Sons of San Mateo. This was done at the request of Sergeant Joe Artavia, who wrote to his sister from the jungles of Vietnam expressing concern that only some in his unit received Christmas packages, deepening the loneliness of those who received nothing. Once adopted, the entire city came together, sending the Sons hundreds of letters and care packages that lifted their spirits tremendously. The support didn’t stop there — in December 1968, the city sent thousands of Christmas cards and gifts to the troops. This relationship continued with the Sons returning to San Mateo for a welcome-home parade in January 1972. You can still find memorial plaques and dedications to the Sons throughout the city today. Thrive San Mateo: Resources for Living Well July is Social Wellness Month: Strengthen Your Connections in San Mateo This July, let’s celebrate Social Wellness Month, a nationwide reminder to nurture supportive relationships and build stronger bonds with those around us. 5 Ways to Boost Social Wellness in San Mateo This Week 1) Take a “wellness walk” together Stroll through one of San Mateo’s beautiful parks like Shoreline Parks or hit the trails at Laurelwood Park. A casual walk-and-talk is a simple, powerful way to reconnect. 2) Try a Parks & Rec Class Check out parks and rec activities, such as hula, tai chi, music or arts and crafts classes at San Mateo’s rec centers - perfect for all ages. 3) Plan a Picnic or Coffee Meetup Gather a friend or neighbor for a relaxed outdoor catch-up. Even 30 minutes of face-to-face time can do wonders. 4) Reach Out to Someone New Introduce yourself to a neighbor, chat with a coworker over lunch, or join a local club. A great way to do that is check out the various book clubs and other group activities for kids teens and adults at the library. Building new connections is part of social self-care too! 5) Go to an Outdoor Special Event A great way to reconnect with friends or make new ones is to participate in one of the City's special events, such as the Central Park Music Series on Thursdays, Central Bark on August 17, or Movies in the Park on Fridays in September. This week, prioritize the people who help you feel supported and uplifted. Whether it’s a quick text, a walk in the park, or trying something new together, strengthening your social wellness supports a happier, healthier San Mateo.
